level wind or open spool ? - 2006/12/23 13:28
I'am a little late on this post but like fishing better late than never. What i have found over the years is that not all reels are for all fish.I use a Shimano Corsair 300 baitcaster for fluke fishing with 15 lb test. I use a Shimano Corsair 400A and Corvalus CVL400 (baitcaster)with 17 lb test for striper fishing. I use a Penn 310 Gti level wind reel for bottom fishing(tog, cod, big seabass)with 25lb test. I use a Penn 330 Gti level wind with 50 lb test for school bluefin tuna( the toughest tuna in the sea) and open spool Penn Senators 4/0,6/0 up to 9/0 for the larger tuna ,75lbs and up. It's all about cleaning the gear when your done and winterize it like the boat in the winter. All my gear works like the day I bought it and I fish "hard" all year! Its like your car, if you don't change the oil it won't last! A tip to keep them going is to wash them off after each use and lubercate the spool and with a spray silicon on a rag wipe the reel and rod down and you will be amazed at how long they last! DO NOT WIPE THE REEL SEAT AND BUT!!! I still have my first fishingpole(3 piece reeless bought in 1960 in Georga) and rod and reel, a penn 109 with matching rod a gift from my dad. Soap and water go a long way.
