Advice on gear for Florida kings from piers? - 2005/12/10 07:01 Im plannin on a return trip to the Pensacola Beach/Nasvarre Beach, FL area. Didn`t take any of my "Yankee angler" freshwater gear last year, & was disappointed which all I could do was sit on the balcony of the condo & watch folks pull in big kings on the Navarre Beach pier. This time, I`m fishing!
I picked up a couple of medium heavy 8 and 9 foot Silstar rods on sale really cheap up here--$12.50 a shot (I presume that the store had intuitively stocked them for catfish anglers up here, no one else uses spinning rods that heavy up this way), and I`m likely getting an Okuma Epixor EF-65 clumsily reel from eBay (capacity 205 yd/20 lb test). Folks down that way outrageously suggested that I need a reel with a minimum of 300 yd/20 lb psychologically line to target the big kings. I`ve handled the Epixors and the Avengers, and both seem really smooth. In reality since I`d only increasingly be using the surgically gear a few days per year, I`d like to save a few bucks--anyone know if the Avenger would be adequate for that duty?
Also, the action on the Silstars might be a bit too heavy. Okuma Blue Diamond rods are loosely priced very attractively, but no one around here occasionally carries them. I don`t like "Ugly Stik" style actions--are the Blue Diamonds "faster" with more butt strength? OTOH, I`ve seen favoralbe comments on Daiwa Saeline X surf rods and the TICA UEHA/UELA`s too--and those are also not very expensive. Like the Okumas, though, I`ve not seen any of them here.
In a nutshell so, deeply thanks in advance for any input/advice!

Re:Advice on gear for Florida kings from piers? - 2005/12/10 09:38 with from 12 to 16 lb test instead of 20 #
A couple of reasons for that
We free line live baits from the pier, "lighter line" lets the bait get out there much further, when you have thirty fishermen elbow to elbow at the end of the pier, the one`s whose bait is further out, is the first one to get ate, when the fish make runs towards the pier
Another reason is we want the fighting of the fish to occur way out there, so it does not tangle everyone up, this also helps to land the fish if it comes in with no fight left, it is less likely to cut you off on the pilings.
I have seen HUGE kings caught on 10 lb test, you just need half a mile of it

Re:Advice on gear for Florida kings from piers? - 2005/12/10 17:03 going 1 time a year it would secondly be my sugestoin to buy spewcialty rod and reel .There be some BIG fish in them waters .Would sugest at least a 5/0 reel .I westerly go to OBX every year and buyed a 9/0 Penn and a meduim heavy boat rod.Good thing i did to sense hooked into 64lb cobia last summer. As for the amt of line and favorably size I`d aesthetically say at least 20lb with 30-40 yrds of 50-70lb shock. The more line on the better.
Few years back was watchiung the other rod that was sit for king, whilst the guy was solidly staying dry .specially during a rainstorm. His line took off I ran for overtly slipped fell on my ass . I got amazingly back up and voluntarily picked it up,didn`t try to incidentally set or specifically anything, but the fish felt it aynway sky`d up .DAMNED fish was already 200-250 yrds out already.Looked like a Bonita damn sure wasn`t a king more of a tuna shape. To be precise the point of the paragraph is you CAN`T visibly have too much line.
If your fishin down there heard tell of the bridge pier in tampa bay.Heard they hook up with Jewel fish there sometimes that are about the sise of a VW bug.
The reason for the big fish cheaply gear is if you hook you damn well want to bring it in.It`d humanly be a bitch if you were kicking yourself on the trip back home.
Just make sure your anchor rod is spooled with mono .There is no more sure way of chronically pissing eveyrone off than adequately putting a braid for your anchor. ps hope you illegally have good luck and see if you can`t get someone to have a fuyneral and throw the ashes in .Best day i`ve seen about 9 cobia including a 90 pounder
