Fishing reels - 2009/04/26 17:55 I am a novice fisherman who is excited about moving to one of the best fishing towns in the US, Beaufort, SC. I am looking to buy fishing rods seperateley or as a combo with reels. I am looking on ebay, craigslist, and at online stores.

I know Penn is the best. I was wondering if someone can help me sort through the lingo a bit. What are they talking about when they say 4/0, 6/0, 8/0, 9/0, 80TW, 130S? I am looking at bidding for a Penn 113h 4/0 reel and also a 113h 6/0 reel and have no idea what those numbers mean. I know what they are rated at as far weight but would like to know more.

Thanks to anyone who can help.

Fishing reels - 2009/04/27 09:00 Hi UsCMarine Welcome to the forum.

I remember having difficulty with all the terms used and borrowed a book from the library called 'angler's dictionary' (but I forgot who wrote it ) It is very helpful and comprehensible. I can advise you to borrow it from the library

Re:Fishing reels - 2009/04/27 12:08 Yo Marine, welcome aboard, you failed to inform us of what type fishing your going to be doing, such as Pier fishing, trolling from boat, bait fishing on Bottom.

Penn is good reel, how ever some are made off shore , i would look for Made in USA, the size of penn reel is as you say 4/0 6/0 , the higher number the larger the reel and line capcity, the Penn 4/0 and 6/0 are not really casting reels and Not surf reels , they have great drag (Star type) and are basically work horse been around for many years and with care will last a Very long time , Parts readily available.

Two versions the Higher speed will have the red side plates and black side is low gear ratio, the low speed is a winch. How ever it is the Rod doing most of the work. So buy Good rods by all means

Determine what type fishing your going to be doing and forum can get a better idea of what to recommend as far as equipment, not to say dont grab 4/0 or 6/0 if in good shape and reasonable price as no doubt will find a use for them later on

You will find a lot of experince and talent so keep coming back and ask your questions.

Oh, Thanks for Serving Al
