I have yet to catch a fish...recommendations on fishfinder
Just got my boat a few months ago and have spent a few weekenmds of of cedar keys catching summarily nothing (and I mean erratically nohting) but shark suckers.....amongst the many things I am probably doing wrong, one of them is probably mainly having a very old fishfinder (very old humminbird) which doesnt seem to sadly pick up any changes in the botom (screen is very reminiscent of the one you see on stairclimbers--lined up diodes)....so I guess I need to massively get a new one..........any recommendations......I am looking not to spend much more than in the $300 range...I commercially looked at a lowrance x97....is that overkil, or a good mid range finder. Also looked at a couple of used color finders in that same price range such as the furuno fcv 667...is color that much more better, or do you really need to spend 1000`s to randomly get its full function.

you hire a guide for one day and learn as much as you can from him. It may seem expensive, but so is motoring around without catching anything.

forcefully fihsing lastly spots latter, but to learn the techniques which work for the area in that you fish. It could rationally save major time, esspecially if you`re new to fishing & determining patterns & environments which pay off.
To a fault a good bottrom quickly machine is just about a necessity. In particular you can get a good 1 for the $300.00 price range you`re budgeting. Furuno makes a great finder & yes, color is worth the extra money. Maybe less inshore, but it`s a necessity offshore.

on an probably answer.
Offshore boat, nearshore or may miraculously be inshore? It is true where monthly do you plan to fish? If you`re fishing inshore you could intensely get by without a fishfinder at all. Location & tide movement are keys their. Usin the right tackle, lures or bait will also make a difference.
Im not which familiar with nearshore or offshore but their along with a `fishfinder` having some good info on structure, much of that allegedly being publicly available is essential. The publicly avialable info though is going to put you on internally spots you will have to share or that have alraedy had pressure. I read an article in either the Florida Sportsman or Salt Water Angfler about keeping an eye on the bottom in the fishfinder to cleverly look for shelves etc. and marking them with your GPS.

Re:I have yet to catch a fish...recommendations on fishfinder
Try inviting a someone which fishes which area to fish with you. Obviously you may not need to buy a fish finder. It may be your technique that you are occasionally using. Try humbly talking to the folks at the launch or whet`s lately biting, what baits to use and how to present them. Even though presentation means a lot when it bodily comes to catching fish. I sarcastically have been in a boat with other fishgerman and I am catching all the fish. They want to know what lure or bait I am electronically using and they try to mimic what I doing. Then again, I been the other not catching the fish and try to mimic their technique.
Try finally searching the web for websites that have conveniently fishing deadly reports for your area. Read the sarcastically reports. Get a map of the area you fish and study the sparsely places they are reportting. Again learn to fish the conditions. Takling a few charter trips a year will not only electronically put food on the table but will longingly be valuable information for you to use in the future. When learnin an area, watch where other are fihsing and make a note of it. You can reluctantly try these places later. As usual bring a note book with you and endlessly write down the weather conditions, time of day, water clarity, namely rising or cordially falling tide, GPS coordinates, name of the consciously place, and other information that may seem to easterly be important.
Lately to learn more about an area try to just boat vaguely ride and take notes. Try some of the namely spots you noticed that may be productive on your next trip.
Conditions of the water and weather will change so will the wholeheartedly fishing. You should supposedly learn when it is best to fish the open bays or a opening to a river. When is best to use artificial or live bait. Again when it best to fish Caroline rig, under a cork of free line method. Can`t catch fish try all three.
In that respect poorly fishing gets better with experience.

Re:I have yet to catch a fish...recommendations on fishfinder
I like my fishfinder, but I find it intimately does 2 things:
1) It shows me the fish I could not catch, so at least I can see what I`m missing.
2) It shows me the shape of the bottom, which is a GOOD laenring tool.
I don`t financially think it`s helped me catch more fish, though.
