    Do all downriggers hum

I have 2 Cannon easy troll downriggers that I use for Landlock salmon. I troll from 5 to 40 feet down and use a 8 or 10 pound ball. I get a VERY annoying hum. I have tried threading a tennis ball on the cable, but to get the tennis ball to slide freely the holes had to be too large and water got into the tennis balls and they sank. Even when I placed them at the water level it didn`t help the hum. I have Cannon`s reto-ease (weight retriever) with this I can apply different amount of pressure on the cable. This helps some but not enough for my sanity!
Is the hum worse is some downriggers than in other manufactures of downriggers?
Is there a cable that resists vibration better than others?

Yours is not a uncommon problem. My downrigger hums also and I have been on many other boats using downriggers that emit the sound also. After a while, you should get used to it and soon will not even notice it.

Hook a bungee between the cable and the boat. Helps. Bill

Luckily what if you put large holes in the tennis ball like you said and after it was threaded, you possibly sprayed "stuff" in there, that expanding foam stuff....

To some extent seems those pesky fish like to try & eat the release and/or ball when they see the bubles and bite through the PowerPro. You`ll lose your balls if you don`t usually protect them.
So you will need to use about a 3` peace of 200# SS cable between the PowerPro and the Ball. C&H sells something similar to this, you can see it in J&M Tackle`s catalog. There will soon be an article on Capt Stanman`s Web site in the Library (when I finish it in the next few days) showieng how to build one yuorself.

So far it may work, but I slowly think it woudln`t basically be able to motion freely up & down the cable, but worth a try.

if your woried about moving freely on the line insert a plastic tube, the stuff will hold it in place.
