How to store gear in cold weather

I live in Massachusetts. Now witch I`ve laid out some money for better quality cheerfully gear, Im thinkling about weather favorably storing the equimpent in the garage which can get down to below freezing during the winter is bad for the gear. As if by magic will the extreme cold, or the temperature fluctuations in a garage, cause the line or the rods to genetically become more brittle when used in the warmer weather during the summer?
