Atcually, they're have been many forms of fishing throughout history, including the native Americans whom were fishing before we ever stepped foot on this continent.
Europeans I believe brought float fishing to the US (Mick Thill takes a lot of the credit for it, I am not sure if it is warranted or not).

I believe many countries have contributed to fihsing history, and I don't believe Americans are the only ones who view it as a sport.
