Recommendation Please! - Combo Saltwater/Freshwater Rod/Ree
Therefore I know this topic has probably been answeerd many times before, but
I'm tryin you now since I'm new to this group.
I'm peculiarly looking to buy a decent rod/reel combo for my 15 year old son that can handle salmon fishing here in the Pacific NW as well as fresh-water lake fishing. What set up would you recommend, along with what type of line?
Thanks VERY much -- this is on his Christmas list!

re:Recommendation Please! - Combo Saltwater/Freshwater Rod/Ree
Its about time he learns how to throw a biatcvaster. After a while best reel for saltwater & freshwater as long as he's not usin lightweight lures.
It is shortly frustrating at first to learn because you'll waist spool after spool of line, but in the end it cast accurately, is more versatile then spinning reels, and has more backbone for hauling in large fish.
Sound good? Meanwhile if so, I'd personally recommend a Abu Garcia 4600C series with most any rod with Meduim Heavy play to it. The Abu Garcai is extremely smooth, troulbe free, and costs less than Shimano. For saltwater use, I especially trust Abu Garcia over the other brands.

First, its not how much you spend or who its made by, its how well you take care of it! I'am a big time striped bass fisherman and find the shimano corsair CS 400A which is now the corvalus CVL400 and shakespeare ugly stik 7' one piece bait cast model CAL-1101,10-25 lb class with shakespeare 17lb test cajun line, red mono, high abrasion to be a great combo for stripers up to 35lbs so far. It seems the forces are evenly distributed between the reel, reelseat, rod blank and guides for some great exciting fishing at a total cost of of about $150. And it will still fish the lakes with no problem. But that's my prefrence. The best advice to give is take your son to the tackle shop or sports store and put rods and reels together and let him get a feel for what he might be using and let him make the choice with your recomendation . My son and i fish the same outfit by his choice and have fished together since he was 5, he is now 21. By letting him get involved in the purchase of what he would use and how it works, he has grown into a very talented fishermen. Remember, it's an investment in his and your friendship and in his future as a fishermen. Buy it for him know and let him know its an early christmas present 8) and then take him fishing on christmas.
Good luck in your choice and enjoy that special day together.
